There are so many ways to make money as a blogger. It won’t be easy at first. Most bloggers had to do side gigs that could generate income before they could make money with their blogs.

Starting a blog is easy but it’s very challenging when you are trying to figure out how to get traffic, and how to monetize your blog.

If you are new to my blog, welcome! My name is Kerry and I’m a mom of 2, a boy and a girl. I started my blog in 2019 and I didn’t even know I could make money with my blog.

It was after a year, I was watching a Youtube video that was talking about how they make money from their blog. And it occurred to me, can people really make money with blogging?

I just started the blog initially to create articles on how people can make money from home and really didn’t know what will happen next. Will I get some sort of exposure? Could it be a resource for even my kids?

When I started my blog, I was using a free WordPress page. And I created my first post on how to find freelance jobs. Freelancing makes me thousands of dollars a month so I thought why not share it.

What is a Blog?

A blog is a website where readers go to find information or answers to a question. It’s also a great resource to help people make decisions on whether or not they should buy a product or service.  A blogger creates these posts to educate their readers and also to make an income from it.

Here are your 6 steps to starting a blog.

1. Choose Your Blog Niche

So first, you must pick a blog niche. Whether it is about your passion or something you have experienced, start a blog about it. People write better when they understand a particular topic and they also build credibility fast.

Here are some of the most profitable blog niches you can start:

Business and Finance

This is the niche my blog Virtual Boss Mindset is a part of. It’s a very broad niche because it covers money management, budgeting, freelancing, business management, business ideas, how to make money from home among others. If you like giving people business or financial advice this could be the best blog to start.

Marketing and Sales

If you’ve been following my blog, you know that apart from blogging on the side, I’m a sales and marketing specialist. I created my sales business as a freelancer on Fiverr, working globally with over 250 five-star ratings. Also, I’m the VP of sales for a few companies I work with on Upwork.

Starting a blog in marketing and sales can be very profitable, there are so many areas you can look at. This blog niche covers B2B Sales strategies, SEO, Content writing, sales copywriting, social media marketing, PPC, ads, and many more. In this day and age, a lot of people spend time researching marketing techniques that can help grow their business.

Writing a blog about marketing can be exciting. I’m hoping to start a blog soon around the sales and marketing niche to help people in their business. Neil Patel of ubersuggest.com is one of the top marketing bloggers and he creates gems in his blogs and Youtube videos.

Lifestyle Blogs

If you like to travel, or maybe you’re good at meal preps, and event planning, starting a blog in this niche would be perfect. You can make money with a lifestyle blog very fast as it provides life hacks.

You can share recipes, how-to’s, and even blog about the best vacations spots or where to find the best vintage clothing stores. As a lifestyle blogger, your aim is to provide tips, and tricks on how to make your reader’s life look and feel better.

Tech and Education

This blog niche had to be on my top 5 list.  You can make a lot of money blogging about software. Take, for example, a blog around, what is the best Youtube downloader, people including myself search for this on google. Even blogs about free antivirus software for a computer is helpful for people that use the internet. Adam Enfroy, a blogger in this blog niche is making a bank from his blog by writing about technology.

The next one on my list is…

Health and Relationships

If you have interests in medical or health-rated topics, there are people searching for your help. From issues about stress, depression, and relationship problems, people use blogs to help them find the answers. And as a blogger, creating personalized messages will help your audience upvote you as a professional.

Now that we’ve covered some of the best blog niches, let’s move into the next step on how to start a blog and make money.

2. Choose your Domain name

When you think about the topics you want to share, what would be your website’s name?

There are many ways to come up with the best blog names.

If you’re stuck on Ideas, google your blog niche to see what your competitors’ names are. Some people choose a blog domain name with a few clues on what they write about. You can use this name-generating tool to help you out.

Once you’ve picked your blog name; you can use Bluehost, Godaddy, or Name Cheap to purchase your domain name and hosting.

Bluehost offers you a free domain name for 1 year and their hosting for 2.95 per month. You can select Godaddy as your domain name provider and pay $12 per year or Namecheap for domain and hosting at $29 per year

I personally tested all these hosting on my blog and virtual assistant website and have never found an issue with them. They provide free SSL to help your website security and they also ensure your website is always up.

After you’ve purchased your domain and hosting, it’s time to get to the next step.

3. Install WordPress CMS

A CMS or website platform allows you to create and publish your articles, products, and services. WordPress is my number 1 recommendation because it works well for bloggers. It’s also great because you can install plugins that will help with your website performance.

In your hosting provider’s Cpanel, you’ll be able to install WordPress for free. Once you’ve installed WordPress and created your admin user name, it’s time to get into starting your blog.

Log into your WordPress backend to start developing your blog.

Designing Your WordPress Website

On the left sidebar of your WordPress backend, go to Appearance then theme. You’ll be able to use templates available to help design your website.

You can add a drag and drop website builder called  Elementor to design your WordPress homepage. Elementor allows you to add subscription forms, social media links, brand colors, and photos for your blog.

When you’re done with designing your WordPress site, it’s time to start your blog.

4. Start a Blog Post

To start your blog post, click on Post in the backend of your WordPress site.

This is where you’ll write your blog articles so they can be seen by readers. Your content or article must be 100% original and also contains keywords that people search for on Google. It’s important to note that your content should consist of the H1 ( Title of your Blog), H2 ( Subtitle), and H3 for your lower subtitles.

When writing a blog post, be sure to write as if you were talking to someone so your words can connect with your audience. People love reading genuine articles that they can use to guide them. If grammar is an issue for you and your want error-free articles, use a tool like Grammarly.

Adding internal and external links to your blog can help with SEO. Be sure to link out to authority websites and also link back to your site.

On the right side of your Post is the option to add Categories. This helps you to organize your blog posts and optimize them on-page SEO.

After you’ve written your content and added photos, it’s time to do your SEO. Ensure all your images’ alt texts are optimized with your Keywords. Depending on the length of your blog, add your Keywords 3-4 times throughout the content.

5. Publish Your Blog

Your blog is now ready to be seen by your readers! In this step of how to start a blog and make money, you’ll need to promote your blog too. Use Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, Quora, and Reddit to share your new blog.

Pinterest is a nice way to get organic and paid traffic to your website. I used it for years to help me get traffic to my blog. The best traffic however is from Google searches. A lot of people want to rank for page 1 of Google, but it takes months before you can actually see results.

Working on getting your blog visitors is our last step in starting a blog.

6. Grow Your Blog

Google usually ranks a website higher with great Domain Authority.

The Domain Authority is built on many factors and one is through backlinks to a website. Growing your blog can take months and even years. You’ll need to link your website to high authority sites that are trusted by Google.

To the date of this blog post, my Moz DA score is 65. Websites like Youtube, Bing, Yahoo, and others have DA of 90-100. The DA score is measured from 1 to 100.

It’s important to add your website to Google Search Console and set up Google Analytics to track your site performance. The Google search console checks the vitals of your website. It also shows any issues that might be stopping your blog post from being indexed on Google. You can submit each article to the Google search console after publishing so Google can index your website faster.

How do people make money with a blog?

Here are 5 ways you can make money with your bog.

Through Displayed Ads:

Google Adsense pays for ad space on your website and they pay even more when someone clicks on the ad. The more traffic you have, the more money you can make. To be eligible for Google Adsense your site must be at least 6 months old, comply with Google’s policies and you must have a privacy policy page on your website.  There are other ad networks you can join that pays higher than Adsense.  If you’re just starting out with little Traffic Adsense is your bet.

Affiliate Links:

Promoting products through links on your site then receiving a commission when someone buys is one of the best ways bloggers make money. I wrote a blog on the 16 best affiliate programs to join that pays well.

Selling Digital Products:

Bloggers can sell digital products like e-books, courses, and printables. These are some of the most profitable digital products and you don’t need a lot of tools to actually create them. You can use a free tool like Canva to create digital products. These digital products are usually sold through their online shop, a newsletter, or through a pop-up form on their website.

Selling Your Services:

If you’re a blogger that provides consultation or freelance services, you can make money from your blog listing them. You can send promotional offers through your newsletters about your services.

Sponsored Post:

Popular bloggers can charge a fee for writing a blog post that links to another site they want their readers to go to. This helps the other site gain traffic to their website and the blogger would agree in most cases to keep the article active on the site.
